The Cavell Nurses’ Trust is a benevolent fund that provides vital support to all UK nurses during very difficult times. The Trust offer help to registered nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, student nurses and midwives and retired nurses and midwives. Lyn has become an Ambassador for the Trust in order to raise awareness and support for nurses.
“As an Ambassador and 1 of 100 nurses/midwives, I am taking part in a range of activities, pushing myself to the limits climbing Mount Cavell (3,363 metres), rock climbing, trekking, glacier walking, white water rapids, hiking next August 2015 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Edith Cavell’s execution.”
Edith Cavell 4.12.1865 – 12.10.1915
Edith Cavell was a British nurse during the First World War. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without distinction and in helping 200 Allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium. In 1915, Edith Cavell was arrested and subsequently court martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad on October 12th 1915.
In 1917 the country responded by launching an appeal for nurses ‘shattered mentally and physically’, who had nursed and saved the life’s of others at the expenses of their own. The Nation’s Fund for Nurses was born and that has become the Cavell Nurses’ Trust. The Cavell Trust hold a wreath laying service on the anniversary of her death (October 12th) at the memorial to her at St Martin’s Place, London.
